25 in 25:

Aiming for the Top 25

Cafe Interior

It’s no secret that the state faces challenges in becoming a more competitive player in the national economic arena. Therefore, Wyoming is setting its sights on a new goal: becoming one of the top 25 most business-friendly states in the U.S. by 2050—as ranked by Forbes.

This ambitious goal comes at a critical time for Wyoming. While the state offers unique opportunities in energy, agriculture, and tourism, it also faces regulatory hurdles, a limited labor pool, and an economy that needs to diversify. With Wyoming’s growth potential waiting to be fully tapped, the path forward is clear: cut through the bureaucratic red tape, foster an environment of innovation, and position the state as a prime destination for both established and new businesses.

Understanding the Forbes Rankings

Each year, Forbes evaluates states on several key factors to determine their rankings of business-friendliness. These factors include:

  1. Business Costs: This includes the cost of labor, taxes, and overall operational expenses.

  2. Regulatory Environment: How easy or difficult it is for businesses to navigate the regulatory landscape and get things done.

  3. Economic Climate: The overall economic health of the state, including GDP growth, industry diversity, and economic stability.

  4. Labor Supply: Availability of a skilled workforce to meet the needs of businesses.

  5. Growth Prospects: Opportunities for businesses to grow and expand, both in the state and in terms of regional/global reach.

  6. Quality of Life: How the state measures up in terms of living standards, affordability, and overall well-being.

Wyoming has historically struggled in several of these areas, particularly in terms of its regulatory environment and labor supply. However, with a dedicated push for reform and modernization, Wyoming aims to not just improve but excel in these categories to rise to the top half (25) of the list in the next 25 years (2050).

The Roadmap to Business-Friendly Success

The road to becoming one of the top 25 business-friendly states by 2050 will require strong collaboration between the private sector, government, and educational institutions. The Wyoming Chamber is actively advocating for policies that support growth in key areas like regulatory reform, business investment, workforce development, and infrastructure improvement. By working together, Wyoming can tackle its challenges and create a thriving, diverse economy that offers opportunities for businesses and residents alike.

While Wyoming has a long way to go in achieving this ranking, the foundation is being laid today. Strong collaborations between the private sector, government, and educational institutions will be required. Continued reforms, investments in infrastructure, and a focus on economic diversification will be necessary.

By focusing on what truly matters, Wyoming can achieve its ambitious goal and ensure long-term prosperity for its businesses and communities.
