Wyoming’s timber industry is ready for a revival, and the momentum is building. After years of decline, a new wave of opportunity is opening thanks to a mix of federal and state policy changes, shifting markets, and renewed optimism from leaders across Wyoming.
With tariffs on Canadian lumber reaching 35%, the demand for American timber has never been higher, and Wyoming is positioned to deliver. The U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of
Land Management have already increased their timber sales projections, with long-term contracts in the works that could keep Wyoming’s sawmills buzzing for the next decade. Sales are climbing rapidly, from 33.5 million board feet in 2024 to more than 30 million already in 2025.
WY It Matters
Expanding timber production means revitalizing local sawmills, creating jobs, and keeping profits here in Wyoming rather than shipping across state lines. It means manufacturing products like lumber, posts, poles, and firewood locally. And, it means strengthening our communities by fueling small business growth and ensuring Wyoming workers can thrive.
The benefits go beyond business. Increased timber harvests also improve forest health and reduce wildfire risks, creating safer communities while promoting smarter land stewardship. Through stewardship sales and cooperation between federal agencies, the state, and local governments, Wyoming is forging a model that supports both economic growth and environmental resilience.
