Sentinel progress is shooting forward! Earlier this month, the U.S. Air Force, in conjunction with Northrup Grumman, successfully completed a full scale qualification static fire test of the intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). After blowing through this milestone, the motor design of the ICBM has been further validated and the next steps in its design can be taken. In a press release from the Air Force, Big. Gen. William Rogers, Air Force program executive officer for ICBMs and director of the Air Force Nuclear Weapon Center’s ICBM Systems Directorate, had the following to say:
“As we modernize our nuclear triad, the ICBM Systems Directorate is driven to securely deliver America’s ICBM capabilities. This brings us one step closer to fielding the Sentinel weapon system, a vital component of our nation's strategic deterrence and a testament to our unwavering commitment to national security.”
The big picture: For those of you who might not be familiar with what the Sentinel ICBM system is and why it’s relevant to Wyoming, we have you covered. The current ICBM system we have in place is called Minuteman III, which has been in use for decades. Upgrading this system with new technology is vital to our nation’s defense. There are three Air Force Bases that are set to receive an ICBM upgrade in the near future, and Cheyenne’s F.E. Warren AFB is one of them!
WY We Care: Your Wyoming Chamber of Commerce has been a fierce advocate of the implementation of Sentinel, and we are thrilled to see it moving forward and making progress. We applaud all of the hard work that has gone into getting us this far, and we will continue to support the push to get Sentinel finished and implemented.
This project is not only a win for our economy—creating jobs, driving investment, and strengthening local business—but it also plays a vital role in bolstering our nation’s security. Sentinel’s progress ensures Wyoming remains a key player in safeguarding our country while supporting economic growth right here at home.
