The Biggest Tax Hike in History?

Writer: Wyoming Chamber TeamWyoming Chamber Team

A new U.S. Chamber of Commerce survey shows overwhelming public support for making the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) permanent. Without action, these pro-growth reforms will expire this year, triggering the largest tax hike in U.S. history.

Voters recognize that lower, simpler taxes fuel economic growth, create jobs, and keep American businesses competitive. By a 3-to-1 margin (64% to 20%), they support extending the TCJA. This support crosses party lines—81% of Republicans, 55% of Independents, and 53% of Democrats back the 2017 tax law.

Pro-Business, Pro-Growth Policies Have Strong Backing:

  • 75% support restoring full R&D deductions

  • 73% want permanent full capital expensing

  • 73% favor keeping the 20% pass-through deduction

  • 69% support restoring a fairer interest expense deduction

According to the survey, Americans agree—the best path to a balanced budget is smart fiscal management, eliminating waste, and fostering economic growth. The U.S. Chamber is uniting nearly 500 business organizations to champion policies that support businesses, drive job creation, and strengthen the economy.
