In today’s environment, small businesses face a number of challenges and barriers that hinder their path to success, and one of the biggest is excessive regulation. While some regulations are necessary to keep the market, consumers, and environments fair and safe, many are over the top and overreaching.
Excessive regulation puts a strain on businesses of all sizes, but small businesses tend to feel the pain more than others. According to a study done by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, 51% of small business owners report that regulatory compliance makes it harder for them to grow their business. While there is often a hefty monetary cost for businesses that comes with these regulation, there is the less obvious burden of time spent working to ensure they are properly complying. We have seen a recent onslaught of regulations that would take thousands of hours for a single business owner to go through and comply with, which is unfeasible for many businesses. These regulations, while they may be well-intentioned, come at the expense of our businesses, and often the consumer as well.
The changing of office brings about an opportunity to overturn regulations that have been issued since August of 2024 using the Congressional Review Act (CRA). The U.S. Chamber has named three specific regulations that they believe should be overturned immediately. While rules issued before August 2024 are still able to be overturned, it requires much more time and effort. The new administration has, however, stated its intent to remove many of the regulations that have been put in place over the last four years.
