The Wyoming Industrial Siting Council has approved TerraPower’s construction permit for its Natrium nuclear power plant near Kemmerer, marking the first state permit for a commercial-scale advanced nuclear project in the U.S.

The plant, designed to generate 345 megawatts of consistent power with the ability to briefly ramp up to 500 megawatts, will use liquid sodium cooling and HALEU fuel. Construction will peak at 1,600 workers in 2028, with operations slated to begin in 2030.

Situated near the retiring Naughton coal plant, the facility will reuse existing infrastructure and local workforce expertise. Backed by $2 billion in federal funding, the project aims to supply clean energy to 250,000 homes and serve as a model for future deployments, with plans to expand across Wyoming and internationally.

WY it Matters: This project is a game-changer for Wyoming’s economy and energy future. By repurposing infrastructure from the retiring Naughton coal plant, it taps into the local workforce while positioning Wyoming as a leader in clean energy innovation. As the world faces an energy crisis, the Natrium plant offers a reliable and scalable solution, reducing dependence on traditional energy sources while creating new opportunities for Wyoming businesses to thrive in a transitioning energy landscape.
