OpenAI and Oracle Partnership Could Bring Major Data Center to Cheyenne

ree

A new partnership between OpenAI and Oracle could significantly expand Wyoming’s data infrastructure, and Cheyenne is a leading contender.

OpenAI, the artificial intelligence company behind ChatGPT, has announced plans to lease 4.5 gigawatts of data center power from Oracle to support its rapidly growing AI operations. To meet that demand, Oracle plans to build additional data centers, with Wyoming named among the potential sites.

Cheyenne stands out as a strong candidate. Of the 13 data centers currently operating in Wyoming, 10 are located in Cheyenne, making it the state’s primary hub for digital infrastructure.

The city benefits from a transcontinental fiber line that runs along Interstate 80, providing the high-speed connectivity essential for data center operations. In addition, Black Hills Energy, Cheyenne’s energy provider, has developed both the infrastructure and competitive rate structures necessary to support large-scale, energy-intensive facilities.

Together, these assets position Cheyenne as a logical choice for future investment in advanced data center development.

WY It Matters

This potential expansion isn’t just a win for tech, it’s a signal that Wyoming is becoming a serious player in the future of business and innovation.

If Oracle selects Cheyenne for a new data center, it could bring major investment and increased demand for local services and suppliers. It also strengthens Wyoming’s case as a destination for cutting-edge industries, positioning the state as a hub for AI, cloud computing, and advanced infrastructure.

However, the opportunity comes with challenges. The ongoing demand for reliable, large-scale energy to support multiple data centers continues to test the limits of current infrastructure. The success of future developments will hinge on Wyoming’s ability to scale its infrastructure, workforce, housing, and business support services.
