Wyoming’s Uranium Comeback: From Dormant to Dominant

ree

Wyoming has officially overtaken Texas in uranium production, signaling not just a comeback but a renaissance for an industry that sat idle for decades. In the first quarter of 2025, Wyoming produced 92,595 pounds of uranium concentrate, edging past Texas and placing itself firmly on the path to reclaiming the national No. 1 spot. With three mines ramping up, another project in the Shirley Basin set to launch, and long-licensed facilities finally roaring back to life, this is more than a blip on the radar, it’s the start of something big.

Industry experts are talking millions of pounds per quarter. A level of production that could further put Wyoming at the center of America’s nuclear future. That turnaround is fueled by a perfect storm: rising uranium prices, federal restrictions on Russian imports, surging electricity demand from data centers and growing populations, and renewed confidence in nuclear power as a clean, reliable energy source.

WY It Matters

  • Jobs & Investment: Uranium’s resurgence brings new employment opportunities, contracts for local suppliers, and a fresh wave of capital into Wyoming communities. More production means more payrolls, more spending, and more growth for Main Street businesses.

  • Energy Security = Economic Security: With nearly 100 nuclear reactors across the U.S. consuming 50 million pounds of uranium annually, Wyoming’s ability to scale production makes the state a strategic leader in keeping the lights on and powering the economy.

  • Global Demand, Local Advantage: Kazakhstan’s announced production cuts, coupled with federal restrictions on Russian imports, put Wyoming producers in the driver’s seat. That demand translates into stronger long-term contracts, investment stability, and an opportunity for Wyoming to lead not just the nation, but the world.

  • Free Enterprise in Action: For decades, uranium sat stalled under weak prices and foreign competition. Now, Wyoming’s private sector is proving what happens when markets align with opportunity: innovation, growth, and global competitiveness.

In short: Wyoming is mining uranium and momentum. And that momentum has ripple effects across every business sector in the state.
