Wyoming Sets Record in Carbon Storage Innovation

ree

The Sweetwater Carbon Storage Hub, a partnership between the University of Wyoming’s School of Energy Resources and Frontier Infrastructure Holdings, has set a national milestone by drilling the deepest Class VI carbon storage well in U.S. history. Reaching 18,437 feet beneath Sweetwater County, this well is designed to permanently store carbon dioxide deep underground in a safe and highly regulated environment.

Cyclone Drilling of Gillette, a Wyoming company known for its expertise in extended-reach drilling, led the technical effort using its Rig 35. The depth was not only a record but a necessity, ensuring storage occurs below existing gas wells and taking advantage of Wyoming’s unique geology, which has already proven its ability to contain gases securely for tens of millions of years.

WY It Matters: For Wyoming’s economy, projects like this advance the Chamber’s vision: leveraging every energy resource, traditional and emerging, to strengthen our position as the nation’s energy hub. Carbon capture and storage is not just about reducing emissions; it’s about expanding Wyoming’s energy portfolio, securing investment, and ensuring our state remains at the forefront of powering the nation for generations to come.
